Effectively Delivering Behaviour Analytic Services via Telehealth during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The World Health Organisation declared the outbreak of Covid-19 a pandemic on the 11th March 2020, which forced many countries around the world into national lockdowns. With social contact limited and people advised to stay at home, many behaviour analytic providers had to quickly transfer traditional face-to-face services to online platforms without much (or any) experience of delivering services this way. Drawing on research and “lessons learned,” this webinar will discuss some strategies for effectively using telehealth for behaviour analytic service provision. The webinar will present current research on the use of telehealth, as well as providing practical recommendations for service delivery, including solutions on overcoming technology difficulties, preparing for an effective session, and effectively training caregivers via videoconferencing software. It also will examine the costs and benefits of telehealth-based provision when compared to face-to-face delivery.
Learning Objectives
- Attendees will gain an understanding of what telehealth is and the research supporting its use for providing behaviour analytic services.
- Attendees will learn how telehealth can provide effective behaviour analytic consultation and training when face-to-face service delivery is not possible.
- Attendees will learn about common technological difficulties and how these can be overcome to provide effective support.
About Our Speakers
Emma Craig is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) with 10 years experience working with autistic children and adults. Emma is passionate about using the principles of applied behaviour analysis to increase socially significant behaviours and enhance the quality of life of the individuals with whom she works. Emma recently passed her PhD viva at Queens University Belfast, where she examined the effectiveness of behaviour analytic interventions delivered via telehealth in training professionals working with autistic children.
Jenny Ferguson is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) and qualified teacher with 10 years experience using ABA to support and teach ASD individuals. Jenny started her career working in early intervention in Ontario, Canada and has subsequently worked in London and Northern Ireland. Jenny is in the final stages of her PhD at Queens University Belfast, which examines the use telehealth to support and coach parents in naturalistic strategies designed to promote communication in autistic children. This research utilises her twin interests: promoting parent engagement alongside creating motivation in children.
